About SciTech

SciTech is a well-established an international science and technology research camp organized by the Center for Pre-University Education and hosted each summer at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, one of the world's leading technology universities.

This program is intended for eleventh and twelfth grade high school students from around the world who have demonstrated an exceptional interest and ability in science and technology. This program brings together outstanding students from North and South America, Europe, Asia, Israel and elsewhere.

The 3-4 weeks program for gifted high school students combines scientific research with a program of cultural and social activities. This three week program brings together outstanding students from North and South America, Europe, Asia, Israel and elsewhere and is intended to challenge even the brightest students. Projects are conducted in the Technion's Faculties of Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine and Architecture, and make use of world class research facilities. Students work individually or in small teams on a project of their choice, supervised by members of the Technion's research staff. Afternoons and evenings are devoted to social and cultural activities. Several tours are included in the program.

To introduce talented teenagers to research activities in science and technology.
To give them the opportunity to work under the personal supervision of Technion research staff.
To build scientific & cultural bridges with students from other countries.
To explore the many facets of Israeli society and history.

If you are a science-oriented high-school student in grades 11-12 with a proven record of academic excellence, then the SciTech international summer program may be for you. The program is intended for students of both sexes, and of any race, creed, color, or religion. Those candidates will be selected who best can benefit from the Technion's atmosphere of excellence.

The program contains both scientific and social activities in which the students are expected to participate full-time. Day to day progress will be monitored by academic mentors and social counselors.

Students will work either individually or in small groups on projects selected from the research interests of the Technion, and using the state of the art facilities available in Technion research laboratories.

Upon completion of their projects students prepare a written report, poster presentation, and oral presentation for the final, plenary assembly of all the participants. The reports are published in Annual SciTech Proceedings. Each participant receives a SciTech graduation certificate at the closing ceremony.

The social program includes tours, lectures, movies, sports and cultural activities. The camp provides opportunities to discover the multifaceted culture and history of Israel.

The topics available range from Mathematics and the Physical Sciences, through Biology and the Life Sciences to the Engineering Sciences, Medicine, Information Technologies and Architecture.

Research is always an open-ended process, and the particular directions chosen will depend on the talents and interests of the students, and the current availability of facilities and staff.

The above schedule does not apply to excursion days and weekends and may be subject to small changes.

*The free time is spent on the Technion campus. During the "On Campus Sabbath" the participants are expected to remain on campus.

During free time the Technion Sports facilities include an Olympic-size swimming pool, a gym, basketball and tennis courts and Technion social activities are all available to the participants.
Visitors are only allowed during free time (visitors should coordinate their visit with SciTech office)* and at the free weekend.
Participants must be in their dorms by curfew.
Students with a signed parental release form will be permitted to sign-out of campus according to camp regulations as determined by the managerial staff and at free weekends.

Upon arrival at Technion, participants will meet their research mentors, social counselors and team colleagues, and get to know the campus environment.

Participants are accommodated in modern fully-equipped student dormitories. Each dorm room accommodates one student. Every five rooms share a bathroom and kitchen area.

All university cafeteria supply kosher meals. Most meals will be taken in the "shoes" Cafeteria, adjacent to the dormitories. Please note that the pool restaurant is not kosher since it is open on weekend.

Sports facilities include an Olympic-size swimming pool, , a gym, basketball and tennis courts, rooms (doctor's permission required). Other student social facilities (including movies) will be available.

The Central Library, which will be open to participants, includes full literature search capability.

Computer services available to participants include supercomputers, workstations, personal e-mail, Internet, word-processing and software services.

A science and technology lecture series is part of the program. Some previous lecture subjects: "Black Holes", "Seeing Atoms", "Control of aerospace systems", "Soap Films", "Solar Eclipse" and "The Extinction of the Dinosaurs".

The program includes trips around the country.

Students will be involved in organizing program activities, through participation in Culture, Sports, Yearbook, and Farewell committees.

All non-Israeli participants are medically insured for the duration of the program.

The campus synagogue is open to SciTech participants. There are many mosques and churches of all denominations in the Haifa area. Details will be supplied on request.

Upon completion of their research projects, participants prepare:

a written report
a poster presentation
an oral presentation

Participants present their findings before an audience that includes all of the SciTech participants, mentors, academic staff and guests. The audience takes part in selecting the best presentation in each scientific field.

The posters are displayed in a special exhibition at the closing ceremony of the SciTech program. They are judged by an honorary committee comprised of senior Technion scientists and invited experts. The committee members select the best poster in each scientific field.

Each of the winning students receives an award.

All of the reports and posters are published in the annual SciTech Proceedings.
